Belgium pics part 2

Update 12/17/08

I was in Belgium for a group show from Nov 29th to Dec 3rd. I stayed in the city of Gent and these are a few of the hundreds of pictures I took of this artfully constructed city. Everywhere I turned, there was this amazing architecture, which felt kind of fake - like is this really real. It felt like Disney world - particularly at night when the city was lit up.

Also, some of you may be wondering what's going on with the black face and the black man chocolate figurines. Well, the short answer is, this character is known as Zwarte Piet - Santa's "helper". Kind of like an elf but not...more like a slave. Originally Zwarte Piet put bad kids in a sack and beat them. Now, he helps Santa bring goodies to all the good boys and girls. Anyway, it's an interesting bit of Belgian culture that would be seen as incredibly offensive over here. Check out this Music video to see what i am talking about.

When my friend Eric sent me a link to this big chested women's website, I had a hard time figuring out why. It all made sense, though, when I read her Wiki page... which will make you cringe when you find out exactly how their enormous size was achieved. It's pretty gross. She basically had polypropylene string implanted in her breast pocket. That doesn't sound so bad until you read how it works. Here's a quote from the wiki page:

"Soon I started speedballing heavily and really enjoyed the unique brand of hallucinatory paranoia that comes with it. I bought a bunch of guns: a shotgun, a .38 Special, a .44 Magnum, and a few revolvers. I used to keep my .38 in the back of my pants, and after Megan went to sleep, and after I'd shot up enough coke and heroin, I'd walk around the house thinking about things while watching the little hallucinatory figures that started to pop up in the corners of my vision. I'd see them dive and roll off of the top of the curtain rods or run along the baseboards in my peripheral vision, but every time I tried to look at them head-on, they'd disappear. Around then I stopped talking to everyone I knew and started doing a great deal of drawing. Throughout my life, my drawings have always reflected what I was into at the time. This evening, I stumbled upon a suspicious re-airing of the Original Star Trek TV Series - the 40 year old one with overly dramatic acting and bad special effects - on network TV. Only now, the space scenes have all been redone with CGI. This is something I noticed... or rather, suspected upon watching it this evening. So, shortly after watching it, I searched the Internet for confirmation of my suspicions. And here's what I found:

Details are still being finalised, but according to sources, the bulk of shows will be as originally shot, with the new effects limited to the space sequences and the opening credits. In addition, TrekMovie.com has learned that some of the music is being redone (presumably for the opening title sequence). There are conflicting reports on exactly how many episodes are getting the ‘enhanced treatment’, but is possible that it is not all 79 original episodes.

The one question I have is why. While I think it's nifty that they have updated the space scenes, the appeal of this show is in it's cheesy low budget look. Bad special effects are part of the charm of this series. But, according to TrekMovie.com, it was apparently done in an attempt to sell the series to networks.

Over a month ago it was announced that CBS was selling a new broadcast TV (not cable) syndication package for the original series. At the time it seemed a bit odd to try selling a 40 year old show to local TV stations, especially after it has just been sold to yet another cable outlet (this time TV Land…home of retro TV). The Trek Movie Report has now learned from trusted insiders, that CBS Paramount are actually offering an HDTV enhanced version of the Original Series with new state-of-the art CGI visual effects.

Hello dimensional shifters!
It’s been a long time since I took a moment to say hello, so today, I say “hello”.
What a crazy summer. Demi Moore would be proud of me. Last week we were in Mexico for my grand jury indictment. Actually we were just there on vacation. And a vacation it was. We went to two different mayan sites. The world famous Chicen Itza, and the not so world famous Coba. Both were very interesting. You are no longer allowed to climb the great pyramid at Chichen Itza. The last time I was there I had the opportunity, and now I’m glad I took it. Climbing the pyramid at Coba was just as cool though (I mean, I like climbing anything really). Coba is also at lot less crowded these days.

The weekend before Mexico LPG threw me a grand surprise party. It was even attended by a world famous NEW YORK artist. Our one and only Gravity Boy! I guess you only turn 30 once, but I felt like a prince. We even had a band playing in the house, and amazingly the police were not involved! We even had a piñata in the house, and amazingly the police were not involved! Two great feats.

The weekend before that, we went to Atlanta and then Pompano Beach to see lots of great music. (the Disco Biscuits, Umphrey’s Mcgee)

Now we are in wedding mode. Trying to make sure we have everything planned. Really LPG is doing more than me, but even my share is tiring (I like to climb!).

A highly functional bionic hand which was invented by a Scottish NHS worker has gone on the market.

The thumb and fingers can move and grip just like a human hand and are controlled by the patient's mind and muscles.

It was invented by David Gow and was designed and built by Touch Bionics, which is based in Livingston.

The technology has been tested by a number of people, including US soldiers who lost limbs in the Iraq war.

Mr Gow, who is the director of rehabilitation engineering services at NHS Lothian, told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland programme: "It's the first hand to come to the market that's actually had bending fingers just like your own hand."

Here is an interesting story from WIRED that talks about the different terror threats that have been received, and the way in which they are dealt. Good reading...

Terrorism is a real threat, and one that needs to be addressed by appropriate means. But allowing ourselves to be terrorized by wannabe terrorists and unrealistic plots -- and worse, allowing our essential freedoms to be lost by using them as an excuse -- is wrong.

The alleged plan, to blow up JFK's fuel tanks and a small segment of the 40-mile petroleum pipeline that supplies the airport, was ridiculous. The fuel tanks are thick-walled, making them hard to damage. The airport tanks are separated from the pipelines by cutoff valves, so even if a fire broke out at the tanks, it would not back up into the pipelines. And the pipeline couldn't blow up in any case, since there's no oxygen to aid combustion. Not that the terrorists ever got to the stage -- or demonstrated that they could get there -- where they actually obtained explosives. Or even a current map of the airport's infrastructure.

This is a picture of Mescalito eating oatmeal in the guest bedroom (also called "number three" or "the back bedroom"). The ceiling has an interesting shape, possibly because the room was once a small porch. There is a closet that you don't see, and a washer and dryer, the washer of which will be used by us shortly as the one that came with the house broke earlier this evening.

Anyway, if you came and visited us, we would clean this room up real nice and you would sleep in the comfortable queen-sized bed on which Phil sits. The sheets are clean and the quilt is very soft. But you may want something more lightweight.

Anyway, send Mescalito your addresses, dang it! I need to get them ASAP. Don't hesitate to call and give them to him, if that's what you prefer. And send your first and last names, and the names of your significant others/dates, where applicable. Thanks.

I've obviously been super busy with pretty much everything -- work, house, wedding planning -- and haven't made time for Dimensional Shift. Anyway, this post is somewhat selfish because I'm putting out a plea for your physical mailing addresses. Please e-mail the info to Mescalito, or, if for some ungodly reason you don't have it, send the pertinent info to Joe.

As far as everything else goes, life is great, the house is great, and we are ready to start welcoming visitors. Aside from unpacked boxes and an unused washer and dryer, the guest room now has a bed. So, come on down and pay us a visit! We'll even feed you, though we don't have a working oven yet.

Hey everyone! Long time no post. I know. I'm sorry. I'm blaming it on Mescalito and LP Goddess buying a house. You must understand that home ownership is a massive responsibility for those involved (which I'm not), requiring an amazing amount of both physical and mental labor (which I haven't done). So, clearly you can see that I have been very busy (avoiding painting).

I did, however, read that amazing article from The Washington Post that Mescalito pumped previously on this blog. This story asks the question: "Can one of the nation's great musicians cut through the fog of a D.C. rush hour. Let's find out." The musician in question is master violinist Joshua Bell, and he plays a $3.5 million violin designed by Antonio Stardivari for an hour in a D.C. Metro station. The results of this experiment shed more light on modern life than they do on modern music, but that's why the story is so great. Supremely well-reported and written (I was pissed I didn't do it myself), I highly recommend this article. (Good find Mr. Mesc!)

FORT EDWARD -- Ernest "Trey" Anastasio, the former frontman of the jam rock band Phish, has been offered a plea deal with a reduced drug possession charge, which, if he accepts, could wrap up his case Friday.

Anastasio would likely appear in Washington County court that day if he agrees to plead guilty to fifth-degree attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance and go through a drug court program, said Washington County District Attorney Kevin Kortright.

A conference was conducted earlier today, during which Kortright, Washington County Judge Kelly McKeighan and Anastasio's attorney, Stephen Coffey, discussed the plea deal. Anastasio was not present.

CHEYENNE -- Out of more than half a million people in Wyoming, apparently nobody here can decorate an Easter egg.

A press release this week from the White House Office of the First Lady states that Philip M. LeDonne of Elmhurst, Ill., decorated the "Wyoming" egg unveiled this week at the annual State Egg Display at the White House Visitor Center.

So how did LeDonne, an Illinois college student, come to decorate the official Wyoming egg?

Christine Bushway of Alexandria, Va., director of state programs for the egg board, said Tuesday the board first contacts egg promotional groups to try to get recommendations for an egg artist to represent each state. However, she said no such promotional group exists in Wyoming.

Bushway said the next step was to contact the International Egg Art Guild to try to get names of artists willing to prepare eggs from each state for display at the White House.

"They didn't have anyone to recommend for Wyoming," Bushway said of the guild. "We go through quite a procedure to try to find someone.

"We turned to a college student to do that particular egg," Bushway said of Wyoming. "It was a process, we asked for recommendations from various people in our office. And that was the name that was chosen."

DUBLIN, Califiornia (AP) -- Video blogger Joshua Wolf, who spent a record-setting stint behind bars for refusing to turn over his footage of a chaotic 2005 street protest, walked out of prison after cutting a deal with prosecutors.
Wolf, 24, said Tuesday he was looking forward to "pizza and a beer" after having spent 226 days in prison -- more than any journalist who's refused to testify.
Under the deal with prosecutors, Wolf agreed to turn over the uncut video, which he also posted on his Web site Tuesday. But he refused to testify before the grand jury about the events at the protest or the identities of participants.
"I will not under any circumstances testify before a grand jury," Wolf said.

Last night as LPG and I were watching TV, we heard a loud explosion.

A few moments later we heard more loud explosions. I immediately called everyone’s favorite CRIME BLOTTER reporter “Joe” to see if he had the scoop. Turns out he did not. LPG and I went back to watching TV. A few minutes later “Joe” called back with news! The captain had called him* and told him that a Tanker had exploded right by our house. Not only that, but the tanker spilled a bunch of fuel down onto the ground, and now other stuff was on fire, and… manhole covers are blowing off, because some fuel spilled into the sewers.

Nice.

I took out the old trusty camera and went to the corner.
